What Should You Store in Overhead Garage Storage?

Learn the best (and worst) things to store in overhead garage storage to stay safe and organized.

Store lightweight, infrequently used items in overhead garage storage: seasonal decorations, camping gear, empty luggage, and sealed totes. Avoid heavy tools, chemicals, and anything you need regular access to — overhead storage should hold things you’re happy to leave up there for months at a time.

Good candidates for overhead storage

Holiday decorations top the list — they come out once or twice a year and are usually light relative to their bulk. Off-season sports equipment, empty suitcases, camping gear you use a few times a season, and spare building materials for a future project all fit the same profile: light, bulky, and rarely needed on short notice.

What should never go overhead

Skip anything you might need in a hurry, since climbing a ladder to retrieve something urgently is exactly the situation overhead storage is designed to avoid. Fuel, propane, and other chemical containers should never go overhead — they belong in a ventilated, ground-level spot regardless of weight. And genuinely heavy items like a full toolbox or auto parts push past what’s sensible to lift and lower repeatedly, even if they’re technically within the rack’s rated capacity.

How to pack for overhead access

Use totes you can lift comfortably with one or two hands rather than deep bins that get awkward once loaded. Label every tote on the end facing outward and on the bottom, since that’s often the only visible surface once it’s up on the rack. Keep the totes you’ll need soonest — like next season’s decorations — nearer the edge of the rack where they’re easiest to reach down.

A loading habit that keeps it safe

Before anything goes overhead, ask yourself honestly whether you’d mind lifting it down at ten o’clock on a random weeknight. If the answer is no, it’s a good candidate. If the thought of climbing up there for it sounds like a hassle, it probably belongs somewhere more accessible instead — which usually means it wasn’t a great fit for overhead storage in the first place.

I write about affordable garage storage because I spent way too long figuring it out myself. I sometimes link to products I’ve actually used — if you buy through those links, I earn a small commission at no cost to you.
