The garage storage industry wants you to believe the problem is a lack of products. In reality, most garage clutter problems are planning problems. Buying a wall system before you have sorted and zoned your garage is one of the most expensive mistakes you can make — you end up with expensive storage full of the wrong things in the wrong places.
After that trial period, you will have specific, informed gaps: a shelf that is too shallow, a zone that needs a dozen more hooks, a spot where a labeled bin would prevent a pile. Those precise needs are worth spending money on. Vague storage purchases almost never are.
Divide the garage into activity zones on paper before purchasing any storage. Each zone gets a rough size estimate based on the volume of items it needs to hold. This prevents the common mistake of buying a large shelving unit for a small zone, or buying six small bins when one deep shelf would do the same job for less money.
